Chickens and the cold

The temperature here in Wenatchee has been in the low teens and high 20's during the day for a couple of weeks. The hens go into the coop at night so we shut them in and let them out in the morning. The coop had a 25 watt bulb to give them their 17 hours of light but also heat. The water inside the coop started to freeze so we wrapped with heat tape. As the days have past egg productivity has declined. So I bought an infra-red heat lamp which really heated up the coop. I collected 5 eggs this morning fingers crossed will get 9.

Baking Days Are Here

Look at all the wonderful KitchenAid Mixers at my Amazon Astore. Using the correct tools makes all the difference especially during this time of year. You'll find rebuilt models that are reasonably priced along with the grand daddy of them all models. Looking forward to promoting high end small kitchen appliances. Watch for additional products.

What to do with Pumpkin

Make wonderful aroma come from your kitchen. Pumpkin for breads, pies, cookies, muffins, pancakes, soup and whatever else comes to mind. I cut mine in half, gutted, scraped out seed and baked them in the oven at 350 until soft. Took out of oven cooled so I could handle without burning myself and scooped flesh into bowl. Mash with potato masher and then pureed in my blender. Strained liquid off and started baking. Makes the best pumpkin pie EVER. The chicken loved the leftovers, and my husband ate plain.

THANKSGIVING

Happy Holidays!
Hope everyone had a joyous Thanksgiving. We all went to Ridgefield, WA and had a great time with family. Chicken partners took care of the hens while we were away. Four of the girls got up at 5am to go shopping, not me. That's just unnecessary. Last year for the Holiday's I did my shopping online, had it delivered to the house, wrapped as I went, easy, cheesy. I found this website of a hobby that I always found intriguing a download able series of books for the beginner all about Model Trains and how to build the perfect track for your space. I'd love to do one out in my yard by the garden . Here are the links to the website ENJOY! http://81555ibk4iw0srdgu6cjx81c12.hop.clickbank.net/ Click Here!

Sunday Afternoon in Wenatchee

Very cold today so the bit of snow is sticking around. Baking pumpkin for pie filling. Chickens will love the scraps of leftovers. They don't seem to mind the cold weather so far. Still laying one egg a piece per day. I've heard they may slow down due to the cold?

Winter In Wenatchee

First snow a couple days ago. We had about an inch of wet snow. What didn't melt has turned to ice. Expecting more snow tonight and into next week. Crossing the mountains to go to my brothers home in Ridgefield, WA for Thanksgiving maybe a little bit of an adventure!

Great stuff here

Oh my did it get cold yesterday? The chickens didn't know what to think. They went into the coop early and talked up a storm. Taking care of them is a chore now. Cleaning the coop more often because they stay inside more. The walk out to and back from the coop is pretty cold. Its no fashion show around here with the flannel lined jeans, tall boots, and big warm hooded ski jacket. My husband will be making me a path with the snow blower soon.

Today is very cold. Snow is expected tonight here in the valley. Moved main feeder and water into hen house. Water outside in the yard has been freezing and other small birds eating there food. Hens are laying one egg a day and don't seem to be bothered by the cold.

Wind storm

There was a wind storm this week end in Wenatchee that would not stop. The hens stayed in the coop most of the time. The whole yard was blanketed with leaves and branches.

I thought this was really great!

Endless Fertilizer For Green Garden

Having chickens in your backyard can be smelly business. I use a lot of straw to keep clean up easier and also keeps the hens cleaner which in turn keeps the eggs clean. I have a large yard so I started a pile of straw and pooh. I clean the hen house and yard once a week. As the summer progressed and my vegetable garden came to harvest I placed the straw pooh on my garden. I've been told its great fertilizer. I'm going to mix some of what I collect this winter into my flower pots before I plant this spring. Here in Wenatchee we have a hotel which uses chicken manure in there flower pots. Wow the flowers are amazing and gardener has gotten recognition multiple times for his display. I have a question about my adventure thru the winter with our hen. Do chickens get cold?

Backyard chicken coop

I made this blog to share my experience of raising baby chick to gather fresh eggs daily in my backyard. It has been a rewarding experience and lots of fun. We first kept them in a brooder with a light, and when they were about 3 months old we moved them into the chicken coop with their brooder. We opened the door on the brooder so they could move around and become accustomed to their new home. We let them out into the attached chicken yard when the weather had warmed to 55+ degrees during the day. We put them in the coop at night and closed the door to yard. They started to lay at 18 weeks and are now laying one egg each day per hen. We purchased 10 pullets from the local farm supply store when they were about 3 days old. I didn't know much about raising chicks, but on the counter at the farm store was a free leaflet from Purina with great information. Important tips keep bottoms of baby chicks clean by wiping with wet paper towel. Temperature in brooder at 90 degrees, clean house, food and water daily. As our chicks began to grow we had a special chick that was a little bigger, more curious, and we named her Lucy. At about 4 months Lucy started to look different than the others, she was a rooster. We started to call him Luther. Well here in Wenatchee ordinance is no roosters allowed. So off to Cashmere he went to live on a large farm with other roosters and hens. Story goes he sat up on a roost wouldn't go into coop with others and started to crow on second day there. I'm told he is the king of the hens and other roosters, healthy and beautiful. Share with me your experiences and check out my photos. Have a Great Day!
