Backyard chicken coop

I made this blog to share my experience of raising baby chick to gather fresh eggs daily in my backyard.  It has been a rewarding experience and lots of fun.  We first kept them in a brooder with a light, and when they were about 3 months old we moved them into the chicken coop with their brooder.  We opened the door on the brooder so they could move around and become accustomed to their new home.  We let them out into the attached chicken yard when the weather had warmed to 55+ degrees during the day. We put them in the coop at night and closed the door to yard.  They started to lay at 18 weeks and are now laying one egg each day per hen. We purchased 10 pullets from the local farm supply store when they were about 3 days old. I didn't know much about raising chicks, but on the counter at the farm store was a free leaflet from Purina with great information.  Important tips keep bottoms of baby chicks clean by wiping with wet paper towel.  Temperature in brooder at 90 degrees, clean house, food and water daily.  As our chicks began to grow we had a special chick that was a little bigger, more curious, and we named her Lucy.  At about 4 months Lucy started to look different than the others, she was a rooster. We started to call him Luther.  Well here in Wenatchee ordinance is no roosters allowed. So off to Cashmere he went to live on a large farm with other roosters and hens. Story goes he sat up on a roost wouldn't go into coop with others and started to crow on second day there.  I'm told he is the king of the hens and other roosters, healthy and beautiful.  Share with me your experiences and check out my photos.  Have a Great Day!
